Upwardly Global was founded in 1999 to provide underemployed women asylees,
refugees, & immigrants, trained as professionals in their country of origin,
with the skills and networks to reclaim their careers and earning potential in
the United States. UpGlo helps employers connect with these talented candidates,
increasing opportunity for foreign-born professionals and decreasing
discrimination based on ethnic background or national origin.
In 2002, Upwardly Global set up an office, hired its first two employees,
launched its Workplace Diversity Advisory Council, expanded program offerings,
and began building its Employer Network. The Employer Network creates employment
channels for foreign-born professionals and improves how educated immigrant job
applicants are perceived and hired. In addition, the Network is designed to
contribute to the financial sustainability of Upwardly Global though a menu of
membership and sponsorship levels. UpGlo’s three year strategic plan includes
expansion to new regional offices, and serving over 1,000 foreign-born
professionals and employers.
In 2000, Three Guineas approved $15,000 award to Upwardly Global. In 2001, the
Fund approved a second award of $10,000, to help the organization move beyond
the start-up phase. This third 3GF award is helping Upwardly Global achieve
sustainability.
