Project: Rosie’s Girls Summer Institute
Grantee: Northern New England Tradeswomen (Vermont)
Grant Year: 2002
Award duration/amount: 2 years, $37,500 total
Rosie’s Girls is the nation’s first summer program for 11-13 year old girls
designed to build skills in carpentry and other skilled trades. Through Rosie’s
Girls’ unique three-week trades camp, middle-school girls expand math and
science skills, push past gender stereotypes and develop a broader sense of what
they can be. The program, which gets its name from the fictional character
“Rosie the Riveter,” was launched in July 2000.
The Rosie’s Girls Summer Institute was designed to facilitate national
replication of Rosie's Girls. In 2003, adult teams from five cities across the
country participated in the first 5-day Summer Institute. The Institute trained
the trainers from each pilot site and is helping each of the five teams launch
Rosie's Girls camps in their states. Teams came from Alaska, South Carolina, New
Jersey, Ohio, and Washington. Next Summer, these sites will be launching Rosie's
Girls camps at their sites, and five additional teams will return to the
Institute for training. The Institute’s fee structure and licensing fees are
designed for Rosie’s Girls to achieve financial sustainability in 3 years.
3GF's two-year $37,500 grant is being utilized to launch and evaluate the
Rosie’s Girls Summer Institute.
